About this tour

This is the day to book if you only have one and you want to understand where you are. Up to La Morra for the view over the bowl, down into Barolo past the Cannubi vineyards, under the castle at Grinzane Cavour and on to Serralunga, the narrowest and highest castle in the Langa. Then Alba, to finish where the hills do their trading.

Five stops in eight hours, with time to get out of the car at each one and walk a little in the villages instead of photographing them through a window. It is not a cellar tour: if you want a tasting as well we book one along the route and it becomes part of the day.

We drive, so the narrow roads between one ridge and the next are our problem. You look out of the window, and by the evening you finally know where Barolo, Barbaresco and Alba sit in relation to each other.

Itinerary

  1. La Morra and the belvedere 1h

First stop, high up: from the square you see Barolo, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga lined up, and the vineyards that each make a different wine. Ten minutes on foot in the village.

  2. Barolo and the Cannubi vineyards 1h 15min

Down into the village that gave the wine its name, past the Falletti castle and along the Cannubi, the oldest and most argued-over hill in the appellation.

  3. Grinzane Cavour 1h

The castle where Camillo Benso was mayor for seventeen years, now the regional wine library and the home of the world white truffle auction. A photo stop or a visit, as you prefer.

  4. Lunch in the Langa 1h 30min

We book it, in a trattoria or at an estate with a kitchen. Tajarin, raw veal, a glass of Nebbiolo: the day breaks in half without any hurry.

  5. Serralunga d'Alba 1h 15min

The most vertical castle in the Langa, standing since the fourteenth century on a very narrow ridge. On a clear day the view reaches the Alps.

  6. Alba, then back 1h 30min

The last hour in town: the old centre, the medieval towers, the shops along via Vittorio Emanuele. Then we take you back to where you are staying.

Good to know

  • The castles close on different days and cut their hours in winter: we check before we set off and reorder the stops accordingly.
  • There is little walking, but it is uphill on cobbles: comfortable shoes.
  • The day can be run in reverse to dodge the coaches: start at Serralunga and finish at La Morra at sunset, which is also the best light for photographs.
  • If you want to add an estate, say so when you book: it needs a few days notice.
  • Paid on the day, in cash, directly to the driver.

Frequently asked questions

Do we go inside the castles?

If you want to. Grinzane Cavour and Serralunga are both visitable with a ticket bought on site, which is not included. Many guests go inside only at Grinzane and look at Serralunga from outside, where the view is the reason to climb up anyway.

Is this a tasting tour?

No, it is a day about the villages and the landscape. If you want to drink we book an estate along the route and the day becomes a mixed one: tell us when you book.

Can it start from Turin or Milan?

Yes, by adding the return transfer. Turin is about seventy kilometres away, Milan a little over a hundred and fifty: we give you the exact total before you confirm.

Does it work with children?

Yes. The stops are short, castles go down well, and we fit the child seat. Tell us when you book and we bring the right one for their age.
